J. Wilson was appointed geologist to the North Australian Exploring Expedition but resigned in June 1856 at the Victoria River. Gregory suspended him from any command and asked M to take his place. Wilson later made a report making numerous complaints. Back in Sydney, Wilson was sued for assault by another member of the expedition, the overseer Phibbs. The case was settled when Wilson was fined £25. See Braddon (1986).
