From Augustus Gregory to Ferdinand von Mueller   [Sep 1857]

Sydney, September 1857

Augustus Gregory

Sydney, September 1857.

At the time when I intended to arrange my voyage to Western Australia with the 'Emeu',1 it was proposed to me to search for traces of Leichhardt and his unhappy companions, and although by this time we can hardly maintain any hope for their survival, the intended undertaking represents at least a tribute to one of Australia's greatest explorers and I agree to the request all the more gladly, as it expresses a recognition of his merits.

So far nothing definite has been decided in this matter. However, I shall remain in Sydney until further notice to discuss the details of this undertaking, and have declared myself willing to accept the leadership of this expedition, should it — as is demanded — lie within the realms of the available means.2

Arrangements were successful and Gregory's search expedition traversed the channel country of western Qld before following Cooper Creek and then Strzelecki Creek to the northern Flinders Ranges in SA and finally proceeding to Adelaide. See Gregory (1858a); the map of the expedition route is available on line: https://nla.gov.au/nla.obj-55177172/view?partId=nla.obj-55199713#page/n5.
