To Asa Gray   15 October 1857

Melbourne bot Garden

15. Oct. 1857

My dear Dr. Asa Gray,

I have but a few spare moments left before the close of the mail, to answer your very kind lines just arrived through Sir Will. Hookers care.1 I will do my best to furnish sets of Australian specimens speedily for your N. American lovers of Botany and will review my Composite Collection carefully for a set for your own herbarium.2 For in whose hands could they better be placed?

Accept, dear Sir, the sentiments of my admiration for you and likewise my best wishes for your welfare.

Most obediently yours

Ferd. Mueller.

Gray published several papers on Compositae in Hooker's journal of botany & Kew Gardens miscellany and elsewhere of which M would have seen copies.
