Melbourne bot. Garden
4. Nov. 1857
Dear Mr Wood.
I beg to acknowledge the receipt of your kind note with enclosure,1 but regret that according to the rules of the Institute (of which I will send a copy as soon as published) no communication can be inserted in our journal, which received previous publicity. However I hope that you will give us from your rich store of observations an original paper soon. This would give you claim to a corresponding membership, otherwise I shall gladly propose you in the ordinary way.
Your valuable paper I shall be happy to forward in my next letter to Sir Roderick Murchison, with whom I am in communication on geographical matters.
The structure of the flower of Stylidium graminifolium, a common plant of S. Austr, Vict, N.S.W. & V.D.L,2 is as follows. Male and femal organs joined on the apex of an flexil irritable column. 2 anthers, 1 stigma between them. A lateral gland, often veritable in Stylidium.
I remain your most attached servant
Ferd Mueller
Stylidium graminifolium
