To Norton Shaw1    5 November 1857

Melbourne bot. Garden.

5. Nov. 1857.2

My dear Dr. Shaw.

I have to thank you very much for your kind attention of sending me the IX. numb. of the proceedings of the R.G.S.

I am delighted to observe, that the labours of my disinterested, noble and hard-working commander have met with the approval of so distinguished a Society than your's,3 and you will be equally delighted to hear, that this excellent man's service's are again secured for the further exploration of this continent.4

I shall have an opportunity of measuring some of the principle mountains of this colony in the course of the summer, some most assuredly exceeding 7000', and I shall feel happy to inform you of the results in due time.

With my best wishes for your welfare,

I remain your most attached

Ferd. Mueller

Director of the bot Gardens
