From Ferdinand von Mueller to William Woolls   [Mar 1858]

[With respect to the species which I had referred to, Perotis, I have been informed by Dr. F. Mueller that it is the Microlaena stipoides of Brown1 — a species which the doctor says ranges over New Zealand, South Australia, Australia Felix, Tasmania, and the whole of New South Wales. He also remarks, in allusion to Lepturus repens (a grass which I have lately found growing even in General Macarthur’s garden) that he had searched for it in all his journeys without success.]2

Lepturus repens

Microlaena stipoides

Perotis

Robert Brown ((1773-1858).

Woolls added: 'The deep interest which Dr. Mueller has manifested in the botany of the Parramatta district is a subject of congratulation to every one who is anxious to develope the vegetable resources of the colony, and I feel assured that any remarks which he may publish respecting our Eucalypti or other genera will be read with great attention.'
