Zoological.

The sum of £3,000 was put on the estimates (ordered to be printed 18 May 1858) as a grant in aid towards the formation of a zoological society. See Victoria, Legislative Assembly (1858) Additional estimates for the year 1858, Melbourne, p. 3.

The estimates for 1859 (ordered to be printed 14 October 1858) provided for the Melbourne Botanic and Zoological Gardens. Under 'contingencies' the sum of £3000 was included for the purchase of animals, and £570 for forage and food for animals. Under 'miscellaneous' in the Board of Land and Works £600 was placed on the estimates for the erection of two lodges at the Zoological Gardens, £1000 for planting and draining the grounds, and £500 for cages and stables for animals. The sum of £500 for fencing paddock, stabling and other incidental expenses at the Melbourne Botanic and Zoological Gardens was later added to the estimates (ordered to be printed 3 February 1859).
