To Julian Tenison Woods   1 September 1858

Melbourne bot. & zool. Garden,

1 Sept. 1858.

My dear Mr Woods.

It was with particular gratification, that I received your friendly communication of the 26. Aug,1 for altho' the enclosed fern is but the very frequent Cheilanthes tenuifolia, yet the other plant communicated is my Lhotzkya genethylloides, which was found hitherto only in the Grampians and described from Specimens sent by the late Sr Thom. Mitchell to Prof. Lindley who however erroneously referred it to Genethyllis & (Genethyllis alpestris) I[t]2 is no alpine plant & I suppose you found it on Granitic mountains of the Tatiara? Country. — At the Grampians it is accompanied by many rarities, supposed to be restricted to that Range, and therefore I look forward with great interest to your kindfully secured larger collection, which may possibly contain novelties. I trust so particularly as I should be anxious to reward your zeal by naming some new plant after you3

The Tatiara pine is I believe identical with the Murray Pine &, if so, here under cultivation —

With my sincerest respect I remain

your

humble

Ferd. Mueller

If your collection, for which I thank you in advance, contains anything of particular value, I will write to you immediately after receipt.

The Banksia ornata is yet nowhere under cultivation, so that good ripe seeds (which drop out of the woody seed vessel) would be very acceptable here & at home.

I may mention, that I will strive after our heavy winter-work is over, to compile the first vol of the Flora of Victoria & South Australia. Any specimens from the Scrub would therefore be welcome & habitats of the rarer species will be noted in the work.

We will gladly read your next paper & secure reprints4
