From Ferdinand von Mueller to William Woolls   [Oct 1858]1

[5. Dianella,—… Dr. Mueller states that there are five distinct species of Dianella in Victoria,2 but not the true D. caerulea3 which he is anxious to introduce into the Botanical Garden at Melbourne. The doctor suggests that the colour and proportionate length of the anthers and their appendages, and also the form of the berries, form excellent characters for distinguishing the different species of this genus.]

Dianella caerulea

Letter not found. The text given here is from 'Melanthaceae and Liliaceae' by ‘W. W.’ [William Woolls] in Sydney morning herald, 19 October 1858, p. 2.

No reference to 5 species of Daniella in Vctoria has been found in M's publications up to 1859, so it is probable that Woolls is paraphrasing a letter from M. October 1858 is the latest date that a letter could have been sent.

M listed two species of Daniella, including D. caerulea, in the 'Systematic index to the plants of Victoria' in B53.10.01, p. 19.
