From Thomas Balmain   7 October 1858

7 Octr [1858]

Sir,

In acknowledging the receipt of your letter of the 29th ulto1 I have the honor to draw your attention to the discrepancy between the statement in such letter that "bathing in the Yarra is to be regarded as illegal" and that contained in the copy of the letter to you from the Town Clerk Melbourne. In this communication you appear to be informed that the City Council have "resolved to permit bathing in the Yarra before 6 am in the summer and seven am in the winter."2 — It would thus appear that the notice board you mention is scarcely required.
