On 29 October 1858 the Secretary of State for the Colonies, E. B. Lytton, wrote to the Governor, H. Barkly: 'In compliance with an application received from Dr Mueller, dated the 16th of August last, I have to inform you that Her Majesty's Government have no objection to the publication in Victoria of his notes upon the Botany of the North Australian Expedition' (No. 35, unit 11, pp. 753-4, VPRS 1087, PROV).
