At a meeting of the Management Committee of the Zoological Gardens held on 1 July 1859, M was directed to write to the Chief Secretary 'for the sum of £200 to be transmitted to Sir George Grey as a fund for defraying such expenses as his Excellency's plan of transmitting South African animals to this establishment would incur' (Unit 2, VPRS 2223, PROV).

This letter was referred to the Treasurer on 13 July 1859, annotated: 'To fowd draft for the amt to this office'.
