In compliance with your request to offer my official opinion in reference to the eligibility of Dr Herm. Beckler as botanical collector to the Victorian expedition,1 I have the honor to inform you, that this gentlemen during his university-studies and during a botanical mission for this department to Eastern Australia, has fully acquired the knowledge and experience requisite to secure specimens and institute observations on the plants, which may be noticed during the Victorian expedition, and to furnish thereby the material for their subsequent scientific elucidation.
