Hochgeehrter Herr Professor

Ich habe Ihnen meinen innigen Dank auszusprechen für Ihre Güte, wiederum eine so werthvolle Gabe zu unserm Herbarium u meiner Bibliothek geliefert zu haben in dem schönen Beitrag, der mir durch die Vermittlung des Capitains des Gustav Adolphs wurde. Die Algen sind wirklich sehr schön u. instructiv. Die Bände der Akademie habe ich überliefert und wird Ihnen das Danksagungsschreiben direct zugesandt werden. Ich werde Ihre Wünsch[e]1 für Algen nicht ausser Acht lassen.

Inmitten der Ausübung sehr gehäufter Amtspflicht[en] bitte ich Sie freundlichst entschuldigen zu wollen, dass ich dies Schreiben so kurz fasse.

Esteemed Professor,

I must express my sincere gratitude for your kindness in having once again bestowed such a valuable gift on our Herbarium and my library2 with the beautiful contribution, which came into my hands through the agency of the Captain of the Gustav Adolph. The algae are really very beautiful and instructive. I have delivered the volumes from the Academy3 and the letter of thanks will be sent to you directly. I shall not neglect your wishes for algae.

In the midst of carrying out my greatly increased official duties I ask you to kindly excuse the brevity of my letter.

The library at the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne has copies of two works by Areschoug from the relevant period, namely Areschoug (1854) and Areschoug (1860), both of which were listed by M among the works that he passed to the Victorian Government in 1865 (see B65.10.01).He also listed'Algae scandinaviae' among these works but no publication by Areschoug with this title is known. Areschoug may have sent M one of the sets of dried specimens he had been distributing, Algae scandinavicae exsiccatae (Göteborg, 1840-1) and M may have been referring to this. MEL includes a number of Areschoug's algae from Scandinavia and elsewhere, but these are distributed throughout the collection so that it cannot now easily be determined whether they were originally part of a formed set. Some were certainly presented separately; see M to J. O'Shanassy, 10 March 1862.
