To Julius Haast   26 November 1860

Melbourne, im bot u. zool Garten,

am 26. Nov. 1860.

Theurer Freund.

Botanic and Zoological Garden, Melbourne,

26 November 1860.

Dear friend,

Your kindly letter of 8 November has reached me2 and has been to me a source of great joy. I immediately contacted Professor McCoy and, as was to be expected, found the most cheerful willingness on his part to describe your fossils.3 He has a beautiful lithographically illustrated palaeontological work in press at Government expense.4

I hope to be able to enclose the printed description of your interesting Gingidium in my next letter.5

I am looking very much forward to your Report,6 and it will be my pleasure to let many others know by it's further promulgation, what a strong support of science you are in your lovely Isle.

I shall not be able to write to the excellent Judge Travers before one of the next mails. Today I am in the midst of the bustle of the European correspondence.

Any paper by you will be printed here, if you will entrust it to our Royal Society, and in return you will receive honorary membership of the Society.7

Begging to convey my kindest regards to Mr Travers and promising to write again soon, I remain

respectfully your

Ferd. Mueller.

Gingidium

Letter not found.
No descriptions by McCoy of Haast’s fossils have been found.
Presumably McCoy (1874 – 82). Plates were being drawn and printed ahead of publication to be issued as Memoirs of the Museum, but this never took place. The plates were later published in Prodromus of the Palaeontology of Victoriaand Prodromus of the Zoology of Victoria. All plates were printed by private firms until 1878 when the Government Printer printed them.
Gingidium haastii(B61.13.12, p. 157). See also M to J. Haast, 23 February 1861.
Presumably Haast (1861).
The Proceedings of the Royal Society of Victoria for the period 1861-5 do not include membership lists. Haast is listed as an ordinary member in the volume for 1866. He became an Honorary Member in 1867.
