From Ferdinand von Mueller to Richard Heales   5 Dec 1860

Melbourne botanic & zoologic Garden

5. Dec. 1860.

Sir

I have the honor to solicit, that you will be pleased to place on the supplementary estimates for 1860 the following sums, required for the service of the bot. & zoologic Garden, the amounts voted for the same purpose by Parliament having proved notwithstanding the strictest economy inadequate for the increased transactions of my establishment.

Incidental Expenses, required for defraying small items for freight, repairs &c in November and December 1860

£20

Travelling Expenses, required for defraying outlays (exclusive of personal expenses) on a contemplated journey to the hitherto unexplored South Western part of the Australian Alps.

£25

Food & forage for animals to meet expenditure for the sustenance of the animals of the gardens during the months of November and December 1860.

£15

I have further the honor of submitting for your approval an application to the honorable the treasurer, that the above sums might be advanced out of the vote available for such purposes in the treasury, until voted by Parliament.1

I have the honor to be,

Sir,

your most obedient & humble servant

Ferd. Mueller.

The honorable the Chief Secretary

&c &c &c

Heales referred M's letter to the Treasurer on 11 December 1860. The Under Treasurer, E. Symonds, replied on 18 January 1861: 'Supplementary Estimates including the within having been passed the papers are now returned to the Honorable the Chief Secretary'.
