From Ferdinand von Mueller to Asa Gray   24 Jan 1861

Melbourne bot. & zool Garden

My very dear Professor.

I take the earliest opportunity of informing you, that I have through a friend, Mr. Stephen of Geelong, forwarded to you the parcels of Carex, which accidentally came into my hands, but were destined for your herbarium.1 He left by the "Lord Raglan" a few weeks ago & will soon after his arrival in England cross the Atlantic.

He has also charge of a few papers for you, I think also of the report on the Burdekin plants,2 in which I had an opportunity of referring repeatedly to your admirable work on the U.S. Explor. Exped.3

My report, detailing the results, both geographical & phytological of my last alpine journey will probably by this mail to go you.4 That I formed a new genus of Vaccinieae, i.e. Wittsteinia vacciniacea, will interst you. When returning from my autumnal journey I shall sort the vast amount of specimens I have to give away, & certainly I will pay then my debt to the excellent men, who so liberally have enriched our public herbarium with N. American species.

Can I serve you your scientific friends & academies in any way, pray command my services.

your ever attached

Ferd. Mueller.

Is there any possibility of introducing the Beevor5 from N. America?
