To August Petermann1    25 June 1861

Melbourne im botanischen u. zoolog. Garten,

am 25 Juni 61.

Verehrter Herr.

u Zuneigung

Ihr sehr dankbarer

Ferd. Mueller.2

Melbourne, Botanic and Zoological Garden,

25 June 1861.

Dear Sir,

From the enclosed sheet3 you will see that I responded with joyful willingness to the request of a friend, Mr Ferdinand Oswald of Nordhausen, a member of the Harz Naturalists' Society, to support the fine enterprise of Mr Heuglin4 by the collection of contributions in Australia. The appeal reached me only with the last mail, so that I will not be able to report on the success of my efforts to contribute to the expedition fund until some later date. I decided on a circular, to which in most cases I added a relevant reprint from the Leipziger Illustriete Zeitung,5 as our compatriots are widely scattered over the Australian colonies and this is the easiest way for me to distribute the appeal everywhere.

While awaiting further results I have covered the cost of printing the circulars and the postage for sending them out from some smaller contributions, and it is my wish to show you by deeds that I am serious about the promotion of the expedition, which is supported in Germany in a national spirit. Thus I am sending you the sum of £20 Sterling as my first personal subscription by a bill of exchange, payable free of charge at any of your commercial firms.

While I wish from the depth of my heart for success in their noble expedition for your courageous travellers who are dispatched under such high auspices, I take this opportunity to declare myself ready to support the advance of your enterprise in every way possible.

Before I close this hurried letter, I should like to express my gratitude for the repeated kindly reviews, by which you as a great authority paid tribute to my labours as geographer and naturalist, and in return, as a small recognition of your great merits in the field of geography, I have taken the liberty to decorate a West Australian plant with your famous name in my Fragmenta phytographiae Australiae, vol. 2, p. 92-93.6

With the greatest respect and affection

your very grateful

Ferd. Mueller.
