From George Bennett   24 July 1861

Sydney July 24th 1861

My dear Dr Mueller,

I received a letter from Dr. J. Hooker by the last mail with a Prospectus of a Flora of Australia to be published at the expense of the Colonial Governments of Australia.1 In having an interview with Mr Cowper2 on the subject he informed me that the Executive Council had agreed to give £50 annually for seven years I hope therefore you will get your Government of Victoria to give similar assistance and then the work will no doubt be soon commenced.

I received your welcome letter of the 26 of June3 in which you mention having sent me a bound copy of the Fragmenta by the same steamer but which to this day I have not received. Mr. Moore4 is at the Clarence River engaged in collecting specimens of Woods &c for the Exhibition of 1862.5

Mrs Bennett unites in kind regards

& believe me

Yours very sincerely

George Bennett

I wrote to Dr Hooker6 by this mail informing him of the decision of the N.S. Wales Government respecting the Flora & I hope you will be able to send him as favorable a decision from the Government of Victoria.
