To August Petermann1    24 August 1861

Melbourne, im bot. u. zool. Garten,

24. Aug 1861

Edler Herr.

Melbourne, Botanic and Zoological Garden,

24 August 1861.

Noble Sir,

I have the honour herewith to hand over the third copy of my first bill of exchange for the Heuglin-Fund,3 also the first of a second bill of exchange, which constitutes the remittance from me of the cash donations that have come in so far for your admirable enterprise. The cash for the amount subscribed by Father Dr Backhaus as well as about £10 collected elsewhere in Sandhurst4 has not yet been sent in. Dr Bayer in Adelaide is so kind as to try—and, it seems, with success —to obtain subscriptions there,5 a kindness for which we cannot give this gentleman enough credit as he is one of the foremost doctors in Australia, who is left with little spare time with his large practice.

We have been less fortunate, however, in Sydney, as you can see from the enclosed letter.6

With deepest respect

your

Ferd. Mueller.

Dr Petermann

Gotha

Dr Landvoigt in Sandhurst sent £2.2.0 just after the last bill of exchange had been bought.
