Vom Vorstand des deutschen Turnvereins bin ich beauftragt Ihnen beiliegende kleine Summe von £5.17.0 welche im Verein zum Besten des Heuglinfonds gezeichnet wurden, zu übermachen.

Ich bedaure keine namhaftere Summe abführen zu können, genehmigen Sie indess die Versicherung, dass dieser kleine Betrag gerne gegeben wurde zur Förderung Ihres menschenfreundlichen Zweckes.

Indem ich mir schliesslich noch erlaube Sie um eine Empfangsbestätigung zu bitten, habe ich die Ehre zu zeichnen

German Gymnastics Club.

I have been instructed by the committee of the German Gymnastics Club to transmit to you the enclosed small sum of £5/17/— that was subscribed in the Club for the benefit of the Heuglin Fund.1

I regret that I cannot hand over a larger sum. Permit me, however, to assure you that this small amount was given happily for the advancement of your philanthropic purpose.

Finally I take the liberty to request a receipt, and I have the honour to sign

A fund initiated by Petermann to finance an expedition under Theodor Heuglin to search for the German explorer Eduard Vogel, lost in central Africa. M had appealed to the German community in Australia to support the fund; see M to the Deutsche Zeitung, 12 June 1861.
