The register indicates that M's letter was returned to him on 10 January 1862 with a minute from the Chief Secretary, but no details are given. The matter probably concerned Dallachy's having been dismissed for drunkenness; see M to J. O'Shanassy, 14 December 1861. See also Dowe & Maroske (2020).
