Melbourne, botanic Garden,
22 Jan 62.
Sir
I have the honor to solicit, that you will be pleased to sanction the expenditure of £400.- .- (four hundred pounds Sterling) for salaries and wages in this establishment during January 1862, also to be pleased to place at my disposal out of the intended fund for wages the sum of thirty pounds (£30.- .-) Sterling, to defray expenses for miscellaneous not strictly daily labour incurred during January 1862. It will be observed, that these sums are slightly in excess of the anticipated monthly wages in 1862, the increased expenditure having arisen from the necessity of providing this month for the principle seed-harvest, also from increased attendance in the nurseries to protect the great number of valuable young plants against the excessive heat. Improvements in the propagating houses now under progress have also added to the temporary larger expenditure.
I have the honor to append the schedule, which, according to your order,1 will be adhered to for future payments of the unsalaried employées of the botanic Garden
