Hochverehrter Herr Professor.

Ich habe Ihnen meinen innigen Dank auszudrücken für Ihre Güte mir das diplom der Königl. Gesellschaft der Wissenschaften von Upsala so freundlichst übersandt zu haben, und bitte ich Sie nochmals der ehrwürdigen Gesellschaft und im Besondern dem verehrten Herrn Professor Elias Fries für meine Wahl in Ihre Mitte meine innige Dankbarkeit zu bezeugen. Es bedarf wohl nicht der Versicherung, dass ich stets bereit sein werde, soweit es meine Kraft erlaubt, Ihre schönen wissenschaftlichen Zwecke zu fördern.

Durch die Gefälligkeit des Herrn Capt. Svendsen von dem Schiff Cecilia hatte ich gleichfalls die Freude Ihre Volumen Skandinavischer Algen zu erhalten, ein Beitrag für meine Sammlung welchen ich ganz besonders schätze. Darf ich bitten auch Herrn Dr Hultgren für seine freundliche Vermittlung dieser Sendung meinen Dank wissen zu lassen.

Bei meinem mehrtägigen Aufenthalt auf der Phillip Insel in Western Port sammelte ich eine ziemliche Anzahl Algen, namentlich Dasyen, Polysiphonien und andere zartere Arten, welche ich gleich auf Papier brachte. Die ganze Sammlung ist heute mir der Überlandspost an Professor Harvey gesandt, damit selbiger solche noch für seine Synopsis benutze. Ich habe aber diesen unsern Freund gebeten Ihnen u Mons. Lenormand eine Series der Dubletten zu übersenden u. beabsichtige dann noch speciell eine Kiste voll an Sie abzusenden, wenn ich von einem andern kleinen Ausflug nach derselben Insel zurückgekehrt sein werde. Ich habe dann auch noch einiges an die Akademie zu senden u will Landpflanzen für Sie u Hr Professor Anderson hinzufügen.

Ich habe kürzlich begonnen die mucilaginösen u leicht deliquescirenden Algen gleich in der See selbst auf Papier aufzufangen, solches auf Bretter zu breiten mit Steinen zu beschweren u an der offenen Luft ohne weitern Druck oder Überdeckung trocknen zu lassen. Die so zugerichteten Exemplare sind ausnehmend schön erhalten geblieben.

Esteemed Professor,

I have to express to you my sincere thanks for your kindness in having sent me the diploma from the Royal Society of Sciences at Uppsala, and ask you to express again my sincere gratitude to the venerable Society and especially to the esteemed Professor Elias Fries for my election into your midst.¹ It should not require my assurance, that I shall always be pleased to promote your beautiful scientific aims as far as is within my power.

Through the kindness of Captain Svendsen of the ship Cecilia I also had the joy to receive your folios of Scandinavian algae, a contribution to my collections I particularly value. May I ask you also to convey my thanks to Dr Hultgren for his kind transmission of this consignment.

During a stay of several days on Phillip Island in Western Port I collected a considerable quantity of algae, particularly Dasya, Polysiphonia and other delicate species, which I spread on paper at once. The whole collection has been sent off to Professor Harvey with today's overland mail, so that he can still use them for his 'Synopsis'.² But I have asked our friend to send you and Mons. Lenormand a series of duplicates and intend to send a special case full to you, when I have returned from another little trip to the same Island. I shall also have a few things to send to the Academy, and intend to include land plants for you and Professor Andersson.³

I have recently started to catch up mucilaginous and doliquescent algae on to paper right in the sea, spreading these on boards, weighing them down with stones, and allowing them to dry in the open air without further pressure or covering. The specimens prepared in this way have remained exceptionally well preserved.
