From Ferdinand von Mueller to John O'Shanassy   28 Feb 1862

Melbourne bot Garden,

28. Febr. 1862

Sir

On behalf of the Jurors of the Victorian Exhibition (Class III.) I have the honor to solicit, that you will be pleased to sanction the printing of a very few illustrations in chromo-lithography at the Gov. Printing Office, these illustrations being intended to accompany the highly creditable report of these Gentlemen.1

I have been further desired to express the jurors wish, that 200 copies of the report (not of the whole volume) may be printed supernumerary for the purpose of being communicated by the Jurors to scientific men abroad.2

I have the honor to be,

Sir,

your most obedient servant

Ferd. Mueller.

The honorable the Chief Secretary

Victorian Exhibition (1861), pp. 225-47.

M's letter was referred to the Government Printer, J. Ferres, for report. Ferres replied on 5 March 1862: 'I have no funds to pay for this work. The cost of printing the number required (6,600 copies) including plate paper will be £135'. The Under Secretary, J. Moore, informed M on 7 March: 'Unless Dr Mueller can point out a fund from which provision can be made for this expenditure I do not see how the work can be done'. M replied on 8 March: 'I was under the erroneous impression, that this work could be carried out without special vote at the Gov. Printing Office. I cannot point out any means for the purpose. Perhaps the hon. the Chief Secretary would allow the extracopies of the report (without illustrations) to be printed for the jurors.' Moore instructed on 11 March: 'If the Govt Printer can supply the additional 200 Copies asked for by Dr Mueller he will be so good as to do so'. Ferres duly supplied the copies.
