From Ferdinand von Mueller to Charles Gavan Duffy   28 Feb 1862

[Furnishes list of trees available for distribution for public institutions, and requests authority for certain expenditure, and suggests that the Yan Yean water supply be extended to the Botanical Gardens]1

M's letter was referred to the Assistant Commissioner (Clement Hodgkinson) and returned to M on 3 March. He referred it back to the Assistant Commissioner on 6 March, who returned it to M on 18 March; M referred it again to the Assistant Commissioner on 19 March, it was returned to M on 25 March, and he returned it to the Assistant Commissioner on 28 March.

There was direct correspondence with Hodgkinson about plant supply and expenditure in this period; see, for example, M to C. Hodgkinson, 5 March 1862.

M had been requesting the Gardens be connected to the Melbourne Water supply from the Yan Yean reservoir since at least 1858 (M to W. Haines, 1 March 1858); it was not connected until 1864 (M to J. McCulloch, 30 September 1865). However, it did not solve the problem and a steam pump to raise water from the Yarra river was installed (M to J. Grant, 8 March 1869). See Lamb (1996).

Letter not found; item is a register entry only, of an item dated 28 February 1862.
