On 10 March 1862 Robert Dickson wrote to Macadam itemizing the extra demands on his time that led him to engage an assistant, J. Edward Freeman, from 1 January. Dickson requested that the committee confirm this appointment and to allow its continuance until the extra demands cease. M's minute is annotated to this letter.
