On 12 March 1862 H. M. Sampson, who had been engaged by Alfred Howitt during his relief expedition to Cooper’s Creek, wrote to the Exploration Committee submitting his expenses of £27.3.6 for bringing the surviving camels from the Burke and Wills expedition from Menindie to Melbourne. Sampson also requested that his pay be increased from 8 January to the rate of that of a third officer viz £200 a year. M's minute is annotated to this letter.
