From Ferdinand von Mueller to Robert Ellery   16 July 1862

16/7/62

My dear Dr Ellery

I beg to forward to you herewith the paysheets for the £15.- .-, which I disbursed for you in planting the Ground. I regret to add, that the means were not found adequate for the purpose of completing the work, our miscalculation arising from the circumstances, that the soil proved a few inches below the surface almost entirely sand in some places, which had to be removed & replaced with better soil; — furthermore whilst the digging went on, the ground became so excessively wet, that drains had to be cut for the purpose of letting off the surplus water. Thus it happens, that yet £8.- .- will be required to cover the expense of planting the circle, irrespective of the [...]1 which is furnished in my department, also exclusive of some other work done by employées of this Garden

Regardfully

yours

Ferd Mueller
