From George Sprigg to Ferdinand von Mueller   23 July 1862

July 23rd [186]21

Sir

In reply to your letter of yesterday2 I have the honor to inform you that an intimation has been published in the "Argus"3 that we shall be glad of a Talegalla. As Mr Smith mentioned in his report a list of things which are available for Hamburgh I did not submit either of the lists which you had previously handed to me.4 The Council approved of the list submitted by Mr Smith but at the suggestion of Mr Lyall I am directed to inform you that it is with great unwillingness they export animals not indigenous to the colony, also they will be obliged by your indicating to the Zoological Society of Hamburg some desirable animal to receive in exchange.5

I have the honor to be

Sir

Your most Obedt Servt

No specific announcement of a desire by the Society for specimens of Brush Turkeys (then classifed in the genus Talegalla) has been found in the Argus in 1862, but the report of the meeting of the Council of the Acclimatisation Society held on 22 July 1862 includes 'a letter was read from Dr. Sclater, secretary to the Zoological Society of London, stating that the male talegalla sent from here had unfortunately died on the voyage, and that consequently the three females in the society's possession were still unprovided with a mate, and requesting that, if possible, another attempt might be made. The superintendent reported that at present there is no bird of this kind at the Royal Park; and so the matter was ordered to remain until the society received one' (Argus, 25 July 1862, p. 4).
