From Ferdinand von Mueller to John O'Shanassy   18 Nov 1862

Melbourne botanic Garden,

18. Nov. 1862

Sir

I have the honor to solicit, that you will be pleased to place at my disposal from the votes of the botanic Garden the undermentioned sums:

for food and forage £35.- .-..

I have the honor to be,

Sir,

your most obedient and humble servant

Ferd. Mueller.

The honorable the Chief Secretary.1

On 1 December 1862, the Under Secretary, J. Moore, asked: 'Can the Government Storekeeper consent to this appropriation?'. The Storekeeper replied on 2 December: 'The amount authorised to this Department (£110) will more than cover the expenditure incurred, in consequence of the full allowance of forage not having been drawn. I am not aware what portion of the vote has already been placed at Dr Mueller's disposal, but should there not be sufficient balance remaining for the issue of the authority he now applies for, the sum of £15 may be cancelled of the amount authorised to this Department.' Moore instructed on 4 December: 'Cancel authority to this extent', and added on 17 December: 'There is sufficient at credit of the vote to admit of complying with Dr Muellers application. No part of C.S 461 [i.e. the Chief Secretary's authority number for expenditure] has been cancelled therefore.'
