To William Hooker1    22 February 1863

Melbourne bot. Garden

22/2/63

My dear Sir William.

I have the pleasure to announce that by our last mail this day two cases (freight paid) have been forwarded to you. The largest one contains Thalamiflorae supplemental to my collection for Bentham's work; the other contains algae for Harveys phycologia. I hope that both consignments will safely reach you & come in time for the purposes for which they are intended.

For yourself I have forwarded Mr John M'Douall Stuarts last journal,2 which will be useful in reference to the habitats of the plants collected during his expedition, on the enumeration of which I am just engaged.3

I beg to renew my former remark, that wherever it can be done, I will be happy to allow duplicate specimens of the collections transmitted to be retained for your herbarium.

Whatever else comes in hereafter of Thalamiflorae, I shall be obliged to work up myself for supplements, as it will no longer come in time for Mr Benthams use, unless in the second volume Mr Bentham likes to supplement the first.

In the box with land plants you will find a collection of recently gathered Australian seeds, which, I trust, will come in usefully for your new winter garden.

Case 9. forwarded by the Suffolk (freight paid) on the 20 Jan & containing Leguminosae for Benthams work, will I have no doubt have reached you before this letter arrives at Kew;

with the sincerest wishes for your health & happiness

I remain,

dear Sir William,

yours

Ferd. Mueller.
