At the Ordinary Meeting of the Society held on 20 July 1863, it had been resolved 'That the members of the Royal Society of Victoria should take steps to testify their appreciation of the services of His Excellency Sir Henry Barkly, K.C.B., &c., who has, for so many years, acted as Patron and President, and done so much towards furthering the main and permanent objects of the Society'. M was nominated a member of the committee established to consider how best to do this (Transactions and Proceedings of the Royal Society of Victoria, vol. 6, Proceedings, p. xxxv), At the Ordinary Meeting held on 31 August 1863, the last Barkly attended before leaving the colony to take up his new appointment as Governor of Mauritius, M, who had in the meantime become Secretary of the Society following the resignation of Robert Brough Smyth, read a valedictory address on behalf of the Society and then presented this to Barkly (M to H. Barkly, 31 August 1863).
