From Ferdinand von Mueller to Edmund FitzGibbon   6 Aug 1863

Melbourne bot. Garden

6/8/63.

Sir

I have the honor to inform you, that a tree near the bathing house of the Yarra has been recently stripped of a large portion of its bark, whereby the destruction of the tree is caused. As but very few trees are left on the Yarra banks and these should as far as possible be protected I thought it my duty to bring the above fact under your notice

I have the honor to be,

Sir,

your most obedient servant

Ferd. Mueller

The townclerk,

Melbourne1

MS file annotation: 'The bark of the tree alluded to has either been torn off or blown off but I could find no trace of the miscreant. J. Reilly | P.S. The man in charge of this bath says that he knows nothing of it and cannot understand how it occurred JR'.

E. FitzGibbon to M, 6 August 1863 (in this edition as 63-08-06a), is the reply.
