From Ferdinand von Mueller to Charles Darling   28 Nov 1863

Melbourne, botan. Garden

28/11/63.

Sir Charles.

The enclosed letter from your Excellency's predecessor1 being marked private, I could not append to the documents, which I now herewith have the honor to submit. But as the contents of Sir Henrys letter bear directly on the subject, on which I am commanded to report by your Excellency I felt it my duty to submit it for your private perusal. It reveals the unrestrained sentiments of Sir Henry's disapproval of certain stages of the meteorite-proceedings, to which I was obliged to refer; and moreover it will convince your Excellency, that any further communication on my part with the Board will not remove the existing difficulty, but only involve an undeserved humiliation to myself.

If your Excellency deem a conference necessary between myself & the only two members of the Board now here, I would solicit, that such may take place under the Presidency of a Minister of the Crown, and then such interview would afford me the greatest gratification.

With profoundest obedience

I remain your Excellencys very humble

Ferd. Mueller.

The specific letter from Barkly to which M refers has not been identified.
