In Despatch No 56, 24 July 1863 (National Archives, London, CO 309/63, Despatches January to 11 August 1863, ff. 541-2), Barkly enclosed M to H. Barkly, 15 July 1863, and recommended that a further attempt at introduction be made, following the suggestions made by M. The suggstions were  supported by James Francis,  Victorian Commissioner for Trade and Customs, in a memorandum to Barkly, 23 July 1863, also enclosed in the despatch (f. 545).  The Colonial Office wrote to the Foreign office requesting that the Consul at Jeres de la Frontera be asked to send more vines iin the manner suggested by M (draft at f. 546).

On 10 December 1863, the Colonial Secretary, the Duke of Newcastle, wrote to the new Governor of Victoria, Charles Darling, forwarding a copy of a letter from the British Vice Consul at Jerez de la Frontera stating that 'at the proper season, in the manner suggested by the Colonial Botanist, other specimens of the vines' would be sent to the Government of Victoria (No. 46, unit 16, VPRS 1087, PROV).
