Am heutigen Tage brachte mir nicht Hr. Brooke (der nicht nach Melbourne kam) sondern einer seiner Neuseelandischen Freunde das schöne Packet Pflanzen, welches Sie wieder so grossmüthig für unser bot. Gouvernements Museum geliefert haben u für welches ich Ihnen wahrhaft verpflichtet bin. Manche der Pflanzen, obwohl bekannt, hatte ich vordem nocht nicht in unserm Herbar, z. B. Caltha Nova Zeelandiae, u. andere Arten erweitern den Formenkreis der Sammlung. Ich werde Gelegenheit haben das eine oder andere Interessante Ihrer Sammlung vorbeigehend zu besprechen in der Bearbeitung der Skizze der Chatham-Vegetation, u in der Einleitung zu diesem kleinen Werk werde ich Ihnen in jeder Beziehung Gerechtigkeit widerfahren lassen. Mir blutet das Herz, dass ich mir so manches Schöne Ihrer Sammlung habe literarisch entwinden lassen. Ich hätte recht gut Alles hier beschreiben können u es war sehr gegen mein Interesse, dass ich dem Verfasser der N. S. Flora das Monopol überliess, zumal da man mich nicht mit gleicher Aufopferung behandelt hat in Kew. Sollten Ihnen nun noch mal etwas Neues in die Hände fallen, so senden Sie es doch mir zur Bearbeitung, denn wenn Hookers Manual erschienen, hat er doch keine weitere Ansprüche an Sie.

Der grosse Ranunkel mit dem Nelumbium artigen Blatt würde Ihren Namen u nicht den von Dr Lyall getragen haben, wäre mir die Bearbeitung verblieben. Hat Mr Buchanan viel gefunden das Sie nicht haben?

Ich werde demnächst Ihrer Accl. Societät die versprochenen Samen senden.

An Travers schreibe ich morgen; bis zu den Compositae bin ich fertig u die 2 baumartigen Eurybia Traversii u Senecio Huntii sind doch merkwürdig, da selbige sich in Bezug auf riesigen Wuchs mit etwa 6 andern aus etwa 10,000 Arten der Compositen gleichstellen.

Ich werde entweder dem Herrn der Ihr Packet überbrachte oder sonst auf andere Art Ihnen bald u gern die Ixien u Dahlien senden.

Entschuldigen Sie die Flüchtigkeit meines Schreibens u bleiben Sie meiner freundschaftlichen Anhänglichkeit versichert.

Dear friend,

This day not Mr Brooke (who did not come to Melbourne) but one of his New Zealand friends brought me the beautiful parcel of plants, which once again you contributed so generously to our botanical Government Museum, and I am truly indebted to you for it. Many of the plants, though known, were not previously represented in our Herbarium, e.g. Caltha novae-zeelandiae,² while other species extend the range of forms in the collections. I shall have opportunity to discuss one or another interesting item from your collection in passing in the work on a sketch of the Chatham vegetation, and in the introduction to this little work I shall give you full credit in every respect.³ My heart bleeds, that I have had so much that is beautiful from your collections wrested from me literarily. I could have described it all here very easily, and it was against my interest, that I let the author of the Flora of New Zealand⁴ have the monopoly, especially as I was not treated with the same generosity by Kew. Should something new fall into your hands once again, please send it to me to work on, for once Hooker's Manual has been published, he surely has no further claims on you.

The large Ranunculus with the Nelumbium-like leaf would have carried your name, not that of Dr Lyall, had the work on it been left to me.⁵ Did Mr Buchanan find much that you have not got?

I shall send the promised seed to your Acclimatisation Society soon.

I am going to write to Travers tomorrow; I have finished up to the Compositae, and the two tree-like Eurybia traversii and Senecio huntii really are strange, as in their gigantic growth they group themselves with about 6 others out of about 10,000 species of Compositae.

I shall be happy to send you soon the Ixia and Dahlia, either with the gentleman who brought your parcel, or by some other means.
