From Ferdinand von Mueller to Richard Eades   29 Aug 1864

Acclimatisation Society's Office,

Melbourne, 29 Aug. 1864.

Sir

I have the honor to request your permission of removing the three-rail fence, which separates Swan Street (or rather its prolongation) from the northern ground of the botanic Garden, it being my intention to replace it by a stronger fence interlined with wires, and then to remove the unsightly close fence forming the old boundary line of the reserve alluded to, whereby the view from the ground surrounding the cricketer-reserve will be reopened to the Yarra.1

I have the honor to be,

Sir,

your most obedient

Ferd. Mueller.

Alderman Dr Eades, M.A.,

Chairman of the Health Committee of the City of Melbourne, &c &c &c

When M's letter was read at a meeting of the Melbourne City Council Health Committee held on 20 September 1864, the Committee resolved 'Chairman instructed to Report to Council recommending that the request be complied with' (Unit 1, VPRS 4039, Public Record Office, Victoria).
