Verehrter Herr Professor.

Es ist nicht gar lange seit eine Kiste mit Algen durch meine Agenten, Messrs Betham & Blackitt an Sie absandte und nun liegen bereits wieder eine Menge für Sie bereit, die bald befördert werden sollen. Ich möchte Sie bitten, Ihren Landsmann Herrn Prof. Agardh an der Vertheilung der Pflanzen Antheil nehmen zu lassen, damit er die Species in seinem Werke berücksichtige. Es trifft diesen Gelehrten der Vorwurf in seinem sonst vortrefflichen Algenwerk die Quelle der Literatur nicht erschöpft zu haben, so z. B. würde er eine grosse Anzahl Standorte habe entnehmen können aus den Abhandlungen des Hr Dr Sonder über meine Tange in der Linnaea.

Vielleicht liegt dem Professor Agardh daran mit meiner Anstalt in directen Verkehr zu treten. Ich habe gerade ein Werk über die Vegetation der Chatham Inseln (nahe Neu-Seeland) vollendet u werde die Ehre haben Ihnen selbige darzubieten.

It is not very long since I sent you a case with algae through my agents, Messrs Betham & Blackitt,² and now a lot are already lying ready for you, soon to be transmitted. I would like to ask you to let your compatriot Professor Agardh receive part of the distribution, so that he can take the species into consideration in his work. This scholar has been accused that in his otherwise excellent algological work³ he did not exhaust the literary resources; thus, for instance, he could have extracted a large number of locality records from Dr Sonder's papers on my seaweeds in the Linnaea.⁴

Professor Agardh may perhaps be interested to enter into direct communication with my Institute. I have just completed a work on the vegetation of the Chatham Islands⁵ (near New Zealand) and shall have the honour to present you with a copy.
