M had written to the Chief Secretary, as instructed, the same day; see M to J. McCulloch, 14 October 1864. No specific provision for this purpose was made when the Parliament approved expenditure for 1865 on 11 July 1865, but the amount voted for the Commissioner of Crown Lands and Survey included the sum of £2,171 for 'Improving Public Parks, Gardens, and Parliament Houses’ Reserve, and for Repairs and Renewal of Fences around Reserves, vested in the Board of Land and Works' (Victoria, Votes and Proceedings of the Legislative Assembly, Session 1864-5, Vol. 1, p. 408).
