Mein edler Freund.

Die Hauptabsicht meines heutigen Schreibens besteht darin, Ihnen mitzutheilen, dass ich mit dem Schiffe Marco Polo am heutigen Tage eine Kiste mit transversen Abschnitten von Holzstämmen an Sie absandte. Diese Sendung ist an meine Agenten Messrs Betham & Blackitt, Cox's Quay, Lower Thames Street befördert u an Herrn Dr Sonder in Hamburg adressirt, den ich um weitere Beförderung derselben gebeten. Der Capitain war so freundlich, die Kiste frachtfrei mitzunehmen, u ich denke dass nicht viel Unkosten aus der Übersendung erwachsen, die Herr Dr Sonder übernehmen wird. Es ist nicht wahrscheinlich dass manche der jetzt gesandten Hölzer in Hr [Moen's] Sammlung enthalten sind, u da Sie sich auf die genaue Bestimmung derselben verlassen können, denke ich wird die kleine Gabe nicht unwillkommen sein. Jedenfalls zeige ich Ihnen meinen besten Willen für Dienstbarkeit.

Es liegen 2 kleine Werke für Sie bereit, das eine über die Chatham Pflanzen, das andere ein paar Dutz¹ Moose illustrirend. Ich denke die Absendung derselben auf einige Wochen zu verschieben, wenn der 4 Band der Fragmenta sowie ein tüchtiger Band Illustrationen von Pflanzen Victoria's gleichzeitig mitabgesandt werden kann, u bis zu der Zeit habe ich auch wohl wieder einige Beiträge für Ihre Herbarien bereit. Meine trocknen Pflanzen vor einigen Monaten abgesandt werden Sie wohl inzwischen erreicht haben.

Ich habe den 2 Band der Flora Australiens gedruckt vor mir. Unzweifelhaft würde Bauer's Sammlung in Ihrer schönen Anstalt manche neue Andeutungen von Standörtern liefern u sich manche Supplementnotiz bei Ihnen ergeben, wie es reichlich bei mir schon der Fall ist. Es sind sogar seit dem Druck dieser 2 Bände eine Anzahl Gattungen nachzutragen, so dass am Schlusse des Werk ein voluminöser Nachtrag geliefert werden kann.

Es giebt nur etwa 100 Baumarten in Victoria, viel weniger als in Neusüdwallis; daher besitzen Sie nun fast die Hälfte unserer Hölzer

My noble friend,

The main purpose of today's letter is to inform you, that I dispatched to you a case with transverse sections of tree trunks this day by the ship Marco Polo. This transmission is to be delivered to my agents Messrs Betham & Blackitt,² Cox's Quay, Lower Thames Street and is addressed to Dr Sonder in Hamburg, whom I have asked to see to its further forwarding. The captain was so kind as to take the case freight free, and I do not think that great expenses will arise from its transmission, Dr Sonder will take care of these. It is unlikely, that some of the transmitted timbers are contained in Mr [Moen's]³ collection and, as you can rely on the precise determinations of them, I think the small gift will not be unwelcome. At least I am showing my good will to be of service.

Two small publications are lying in readiness for you, one on the Chatham plants, the other illustrating a few dozen mosses.⁴ I intend to delay their transmission for a few weeks, when the 4th volume of the Fragmenta and a solid volume of illustrations of Victorian plants⁵ can be enclosed at the same time, and by that time I should probably also have again some contributions for your herbaria in readiness. My dried plants, sent to you a few months ago, should have reached you by now.⁶

I have before me the second printed volume of Flora australiensis.⁸ Without doubt Bauer's collections in your fine institute would give many new locality records and provide many supplementary notes, as is already the case here. Since the printing of these two volumes even a number of new genera need to be added, so that at the end of the work a voluminous supplement can be added.

There are only about 100 species of trees in Victoria, much fewer than in New South Wales; thus you now have almost half of our timbers.
