Melbourne bot. Garden
14/12/64
Dear Dr Eades.
Allow me to renew my solicitation for some small means being devoted for laying out walks in the reserve adjoining the Cricket Ground and opposite the botanic Garden. You will be aware, that I offered on a former occasion to effect these very desirable improvements, if the City Council would kindly place the needful fund at my disposal.1 The building of a new bridge across the Yarra renders such improvements still more urgent, and hence I beg of you to bring this matter under the favorable consideration of your Colleagues and ask for these measures your own friendly support again.
I do not think, that any extensive new works could be finished for less than one hundred pounds, but a moiety of such sum would only at present be required.
I shall be happy to furnish a number of additional tree-guards of iron for the establishment of avenue trees for the park, if new permanent walks are laid out, and furnish also the needful trees for lining the walks.
I have the honor to be,
Dear Doctor,
yours reverently
Ferd. Mueller
Alderman Dr Eades,
&c &c &c
Chairman of the Health Committee of the City Council
Although not an explicit offer to undertake the work if funds were provided, M to E. FitzGibbon, 15 August 1864 (in this edition as 64-08-15a), sets out the works M believed were required.
