No 1 "Green Gum" of Camden and Argyle. 20 to 30 ft […] head, green and thick — smooth bark green color — leaves acid taste exudes red resin. Useless for timber
2. "Wooley Gum" of ditto. 50 to 70 ft till aged of a round compact form. A magnificent tree, not unlike a Horse-chestnut in form. Stem short and rather thick branches lateral and solid. Wood useless. In old age the branches break much leaving the top ragged. Bark rough and fiberous, splitting length ways, bark peels from twigs which are russet and pilose. Manna is shed in April. Grows on low land not far from water.
3. From the ranges westward of Tomah1 — Cook county. Forms thick masses having numerous small stems. Is said in places to grow into almost impenetrable scrubs and sometimes into trees. Bark rather rough.
I am sorry that I can send you no information respecting other than the 3 specimens. I have been keeping them in hopes of getting some description from [Sher]wood2 but have not been able to see him —

MS found with a specimen of Eucalyptus stellulata (MEL 705791) for which the collector is given as C. L. W. Atkinson. The specimen is undated but the record states 'seen by Bentham'. M sent Eucalyptus for Bentham in cases 20 and 21, per Sussex, on 12 December 1863; three further bundles were sent on 9 June 1865 (RB MSS M44, Library, Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne). G. Bentham to M, 18 May 1866 (in this edition as 66-05-18a) sent the sheets of Bentham (1863-78), vol. 3, pp. 113-256, including Eucalyptus stellulata described on pages 200-1, but her specimen is not among those listed. Based on the dates that Eucalyptus specimens were sent to Kew, the item is dated to 1865 as the latest that it could have been sent to M.
MS appears to be notes that accompanied a parcel of specimens.
