From Ferdinand von Mueller to John Lindley   [Jan 1865]

EPIPOGIUM GMELINI — Koch in his Synopsis indicates the wide distribution through Germany, of Epipogium1 — a plant which, when the excellent Genera and Species of Orchidaceous Plants was written, was only known to you from Austria and Siberia.2 I have it from the Tenteburger Wald, that historically classical spot; and I have it also from various places in Switzerland. I send you the only specimen I ever found in Holstein, where it is exceedingly rare.
