4th January 1865.

To Dr Ferd. Mueller FRS.

Government Botanist of Victoria

Dear Sir,

I have the honor to inform you that the Committee of the above Society, in consideration of your untiring labors for the advancement of Botanical Science, and as a small token of appreciation of the many beautiful works emanating from you on the Botany of Australia which I had the pleasure of submitting for their inspection, have elected you as an Honorary Member, and on behalf of the Committee I have to express a hope that you will allow yourself to be so enrolled on the books of the Society. —

I remain,

My dear Sir

Yours most truly

Sam Hannaford

Honorary Secretary1

M's election was reported in the Launceston Examiner, 10 January 1865: 'We are pleased to learn that the Horticultural Society have unanimously elected Dr. Ferd Muëller, Government Botanist of Victoria, an honorary member, in recognition of his distinguished talents and in appreciation of his untiring labors for the advancement of science. It will perhaps prove more flattering to that gentleman that no such honor has hitherto been conferred by the Society.'

M was elected at the committee meeting held on 4 January 1865 ( Cornwall chronicle [Launceston, Tas], 11 January 1865, p. 4. At that meeting Hannaford 'laid on the table' a copy of B63.13.06.
