Melbourne Bot. Garden

19/5/65

Sir

In reply to your letter of the 15 instant1 I have the honor to inform you, that I have at this season no longer any of the trees, mentioned in your letter, available of sufficient size or in sufficient quantity for street plantations. I would however be able to supply either spreading poplars or pinus for the purpose2

I have the honor to be,

Sir,

your most obedient servant

Ferd Mueller

Jos. Davis Esq.

Townclerk of Castlemaine

Letter not found. Davis would have written following the resolution of the Castlemaine Borough Council at its meeting of 25 April 1865 that directed the Town Surveyor 'to begin preparing the ground in Market-square for the reception of trees' (Mount Alexander mail, 27 April 1865, p. 2, col. c).

When M's letter was reported to the meeting of the Castelmaine Borough Council held on 23 May 1865, it was 'received, and tenders ordered to be called from persons willing to supply such trees as the Council may require, subject to the approval of the Mayor and Town Clerk' (Castlemaine Borough Council, Mount Alexander mail, 24 May 1865, p. 3).
