From Ferdinand von Mueller to Ronald Gunn   2 July 1865

2/7/65.

The Thylacine, dear Mr Gunn, continue in good health.1 I shall not be able to despatch them until warmer weather sets in. The two wanting volumes of my work I will procure and send to you. As Aide de Camp of the Ladies, who are sending out the expedition in search of poor Leichhardt2 I have had to devote much of my spare time to their requirements & hence not progressed so much as it otherwise would have been the case in my literary work. I am however preparing the diagnoses of a number of remarkable plants from N. E. Australia for the 5. vol. of my Fragmenta3 & have sent Bentham all my collections with notes, as far as they are required for the 3 vol of the Universal Austral Flora.

yesterday I described a new Borya4 from N. E Austr, whereas before we knew the genus only from the opposite extreme of the continent. Dawsonia superba is not unfrequent in some of the fern tree gullies of Gipps Land & I have sent several hundred good fruitspecimens home, some more than 2' long! It is the largest known moss of the globe I will carefully examine the Telopea moss & let you know its name

Campynema I place in Hypoxideae. It is as yet not known out of Tasmania. I have not been able to raise it from seed. Could I get the living plant!

No copies of the Flor. Austr5 are purchasable in Melbourne, the book sellers, strange to say, never ordering any copies — I think the best way would be to order it directly from Mr Reeve. This work makes material changes in the knowledge of the Tasmanian plants. I have never yet been able to see your Oenothera. It must be very interesting. I have neither had an opportunity of examining the embryo of Anodopetalum of Acradenia & the seed of Pultenaea diffusa

Ever with friendship yr

Ferd Mueller
