[Odd Fellows for use of Zoological Gardens on 9th Novr in aid of Charities]1
M's letter was returned to him on 13 September 1865 annotated: 'to be granted on conditions stated'. It is not known what conditions were stated. The animal collection had been moved to Royal Park several years earlier but the old Zoological Gardens remained under M's control as the 'North Ground' of the Botanical Garden. Thursday 9 November was a holiday for the Prince of Wales's birthday; 'many thousands' of visitors attended the fete, admission was one shilling, children under 10 six pence and the charities to benefit were 'the Melbourne Hospital, the Benevolent Asylum, and the Orphanages' (Argus, 10 November 1865, p. 4). The sports programme was not completed on 9 November and was resumed on Saturday 11 November, with free admission (Age (Melbourne), 11 November 1865, p. 8; Herald (Melbourne), 13 November 1865, p. 2).
Letter not found. Item is a register entry only, of a letter dated 8 September 1865.
