From Ferdinand von Mueller to Hugh Weddell   [1866]

[Mr Weddell said that there exists in the family of Urticeae a fact analogous to that observed by M. Planchon on the Erodium. Mr Ferdinand Mueller (of Melbourne) spoke to him, in one of his letters, of a Laportea photiniphylla in which was found a completely closed cavity, 2 to 3 metres in length, covered internally with a layer of bark. quite similar to the outer bark of the same plant.1]

Erodium

Laportea photiniphylla

Weddell cited M for some details of Laportea photiniphylla in Weddell (1869), p. 83, but this observation was not included.

Letter not found. The text given here is from a report of the discussion following Planchon's presentation of his paper (Planchon (1867)) at the International Botanical Congress in Paris in August 1867; see p. 124. It is dated to 1866 as a possible date, as Weddell was almost certainly working on his monograph (Weddell (1869)), and M had an indirect communication from Weddell in that year; see G. Bentham to M, 18 June 1866.
