Hobart Town
9th April 1866
Dear Sir,
I duly received your letter in reference to Mons. Ramel's discovery, & at once searched our list of Patents none of which mention the use of Eucalyptus leaves —
Though I shall be happy to aid you in obtaining a patent here the agency you speak of would be quite out of my way of business. A friend of mine Mr Lavington Roope a well known and highly respected Hobart Town Merchant will however gladly accept the agency on the ordinary terms —
In order to obtain the patent you had better lose no time in sending over to me the necessary specifications &c
I will take care to enter a caveat against the application of any other person to obtain a Patent for M. Ramel's invention till I again hear from you —1
I remain
Yours sincerely
Morton Allport

Patents for Ramel's eucalyptus-leaf cigars were obtained in Tasmania and other colonies; see M to F. Krichauff, 28 March 1866, and notes thereto. M to J. McCulloch, 24 March 1866 (in this edition as 66-03-24e) is the text of the patent applied for.
